Lunch and Languages Program
We recognise that the earlier a child is exposed to another language, the more naturally and confidently they learn. Young children have remarkable mental agility, allowing them to mimic sounds, absorb new vocabulary, and retain knowledge with ease. Our Lunch and Languages Program embraces this developmental window by introducing children to additional languages in a playful, meaningful, and socially engaging way.
This program also honours the incredible strength of each family’s home language. We encourage families to share and celebrate their linguistic heritage, recognising that a strong foundation in a child’s first language supports their identity, strengthens relationships, and enhances their ability to learn additional languages over time.
By weaving language learning into an everyday meal time routine, we create an environment where children feel confident, curious, and connected. The Lunch and Languages Program not only builds communication skills but also fosters cultural awareness, belonging, and a love of learning.
Benefits:
Language Acquisition – Introducing new vocabulary and phrases during mealtimes helps children make natural, meaningful connections between language and daily routines. This repetition supports memory, pronunciation, and early bilingual or multilingual development.
Cultural Awareness – Sharing words, songs, and greetings from different languages during lunch encourages children to appreciate cultural diversity. These experiences help children understand that languages carry stories, traditions, and identities.
Social Connection – Mealtimes provide a relaxed, social environment where children can practise language with peers and educators. This encourages turn-taking, conversation skills, and confidence in communicating with others.
Home Language Strengthening – Families are encouraged to share words and phrases from their home language, reinforcing children’s sense of identity and belonging. A strong foundation in a child’s first language supports overall communication development and enhances their ability to learn additional languages.
Positive Mealtime Routines – Embedding language learning into lunch supports calm, enjoyable mealtime habits. Children learn to listen, respond, follow simple instructions, and engage in meaningful conversations, all while developing independence and confidence during daily routines.
